What does daily work look like in substation and BESS projects?
We interviewed CFE’s expert Ville Mielonen, who works across design, procurement, supervision and project management. He shares why the work is diverse, how responsibility grows quickly and how CFE’s straightforward culture supports specialists.
Who am I and what do I do at CFE?
I’m Ville, and I work at CFE as an expert in substations and battery energy storage systems (BESS). I have been with the company for almost two years. The work is very diverse, because I operate both as a project manager and as part of the project team. I prepare various plans, handle procurement processes, review contractors’ designs, supervise installations on site when needed and ensure that the work is carried out safely and correctly. I am involved in many projects from start to finish, which means I see the full picture rather than just a single phase.
What motivates me in this work?
Seeing the impact of my own work. A substation or a BESS facility is not an abstract concept, but a physical asset that becomes part of Finland’s power system. It is rewarding to take part in projects that directly improve grid reliability and support the adoption of renewable energy.
What have I learned at CFE?
I’ve been able to broaden my skills significantly. In the beginning I focused more on design work, and now I also handle construction management, site supervision and project management tasks. BESS projects have taken my expertise to a new level. Here you can try new things and take responsibility, while always having someone to support you. I’ve also been involved in developing the company and I serve as the process owner for our substation and BESS design practices.
What does the work environment at CFE feel like?
Straightforward and flexible. No bureaucracy, no unnecessary meetings. We get things done. The team is skilled and easy‑going, and everyone wants to deliver high‑quality work. Experts are genuinely valued, and you can see that in daily work. I can plan my own days and decide my schedules independently.
Why should someone apply here?
If you enjoy technical work where design, supervision and problem‑solving come together, this is a great place to be. You get responsibility right away and you’ll work on interesting projects. And if you want to help develop the company and its services, there are opportunities for that too. The industry is changing fast and here you stay at the forefront of that development.
